Introduction

I’ve been a metal fan for a long time. Years and year and years. Never have I had an experience like this. How? I have no idea.

I feel as though I was kept kept myself in the dark for so long, this album felt like a fresh experience - a rare thing for me these days!

Disclaimer:
Not everyone who reads this will enjoy this album, and that's okay! Metal is an acquired taste to begin with, but this especially is a tough pill for the "uninitiated".I'd encourage everyone who reads this to give it a shot - who knows, you might like it!

Why did I pick this album?

Because it’s incredible, yes, but mostly because it was a novel experience. I didn’t catch a word, but I didn’t feel the need to. The instrumentals alone took me on such a journey it was amazing. I keep saying this but I genuinely haven’t experienced music like this before.

I haven’t been shying away from it - as I said I’ve been a metalhead for a really long time - I’ve just never come across or been recommended music like this.

From the first time I heard Glenwood, I was hooked. I listed to literally nothing else the entire month, and began writing this post that same day. I just immediately knew this would be my favourite album this month.

Note about my review

Since I’m new to deathcore, this might be a pretty shallow(?) / not very in-depth or meaningful review, but I hope you enjoy reading it regardless! I focus mainly on the words because I just have no insight on what makes deathcore instrumentals ‘good’ and feel I’d be out of line commenting on it.

1. Prison of Flesh

Lyrics Song Bio

What an opening to an album!

The build up at the start is fantastic, it builds anticipation really well. Not that it’s news to anyone but Will, the lead singer, has some super impressive vocal talent! I think he runs the gammit of vocal types in this song alone! If you listen you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about, towards the end of the song during the outro.

Will even says in the song bio,

“We took all the heaviest stuff we had, to create this incredibly dark, high-stress/tension song.”

Again, I’m new to deathcore, so the metal vocal types I’m familiar with are basically clean/regular singing, harsh/screams and vocal fry. I guess I never considered there were more - why would I?

Anyways, I just found it really impressive that Will can (I assume) safely do all those vocals, he seems like a really talented musician right off the bat - I didn’t take much convincing!

Also, ‘Prison of Flesh’ for a song about dementia feels incredible appropriate.

Trauma DumpMy grandmother had dementia towards the end and for a long time I avoided her because of it. Not because I didn't care or didn't love her, but because it's difficult to see the people you love deal with not only forgetting you but the memories you have with them and even themselves.

2. Oblivion

Lyrics Song Bio

Yeah, there’s a reason they released this early as a single. It’s a close second-place on this album for me!

That melodic line is really beautiful. It conveys a sense of sadness & regret mixed with anger & frustration that really comes through in the jumps between the blastbeat verses and more melodic chorus. It makes me feel exactly what (I believe) the band wants the listener to feel: despair and remorse. And not for no reason!

We only know how to burn the forest, stain the ocean
Rip the Earth from its revolution

I really liked this one. Probably second favourite on the whole album!

3. In Darkness

Lyrics Song Bio

Wow, the choral opening is actually beautiful! I thought I was listening to Two Steps from Hell for a second (/positive)! Once again Lorna Shore can write beautiful melodic lines, man!

Despite this, I have to be honest, this might be my least favourite of the album. And I know it’s apparently the band’s favourite, but I just don’t really vibe with it.

It’s not bad by any means, I just enjoyed the other tracks more.

4. Unbreakable

Lyrics Song Bio

I liked the grandness of this song, a very big feeling behind it that I understand was intentional from the band.

Despite this, like In Darkness, this track was really filler to me, unfortunately.

I like the message and feeling behind it, but compared to the songs around it, I just didn’t feel the same. Again, not bad by any means, in fact I like it better than In Darkness, but just not stand-out awesome like the others.

5. Glenwood ★

LyricsSong Bio

This is my favourite track in the entire album. It was the first song I heard, yes, but I really like it the most.

The music has a really hopeful sort of feel to it, almost conforting.

I’ve thought a lot about it lately and I’ve concluded that for me, the melody of Glenwood makes me feel two main things:

  1. Nostalgia.
Nostalgia for a time in my life when everything was okay and I was super happy all the time. The “good ol’ days” if you will.
It’s uplifting in this way, as if to say like “hey, everything will be fine in the end”.
  2. Regret.
It makes me think back to all the things I wish I’d done differently. Interactions I should’ve handled better, decisions I regret, bridges I wish I’d never burned.
It makes me feel like I’m not alone in that feeling of wishing I couldn’t made different decisions in my past.
Trauma DumpI know a thing or two about not getting along with my parents. I can't say any more than that.

By the way, if you know me personally, please don't make a thing of this. Thanks

6. Lionheart

Lyrics Song Bio

This song feels like its about bravery. Will says in the song bio,

“This song is supposed to feel like you’re going into battle.”

The lyrics convey this and the magesticness of the music helps get this feeling across nicely.

7. Death Can Take Me

10. Forevermore

Conclusion

My biggest takeaway from this album is that it’s very poetic! I know music in general is poetry, but had I only read the lyrics without the music I’dve thought it was very good poetry! Which is true, it is!
