Initial Thoughts

My thoughts on the film at my first viewing - written immediately after watching. Posted on my Letterboxd.

I thought the scares in this film were simple but well executed and effective. Not just cheap jumpscares like a lot of horror movies lately.

A compelling story as well, a lot of horror is all about the scares and the story sucks but the plot felt really fleshed out, like the writer’s only goal wasn’t to make a scary movie, but to make a good movie that is scary.

Definitely one of my favourites for 2026 so far!

My Review

The first scene in the film confused me at first - I thought I had played the wrong film 😂

As I had said in my initial thoughts, I think this film does a good job balancing scary and story - I feel often horror films focus too much on the scary and the story misses out. I think McCarthy did a great job balancing the two, keeping a compelling plot while keeping you on your toes.

One of my favourite parts, especially re-watching a second time, is hearing him talk about how his mom was murdered, and then hearing later from the bunny man on the TV that the person who shot his mom and was too young to be punished was him…I got goosebumps!

I think the whole plot point of Ohm’s grief about killing his mom is interesting. I don’t know if calling it unique is appropriate but I certainly thought it was a good way to explain why he’s so messed up.

I like Adam Scott in this role. I think he did a great job as the asshole writer. Come to think of it, the entire cast was really good, like the plot/spook balance is often not the case with horror films so it was really nice.

Altogether I liked this film, It gets a 4/5 from me and I think will be on my top films list of 2026.
